What is Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is funding allocated to schools for the specific purpose of boosting the attainment of pupils from low-income families, for supporting children with parents in the regular armed forces, as well as those currently, or who have ever been, in Local Authority care.

Funding is allocated to children who are currently on Free School Meals (FSM) or have been on FSM at any time over the last six years (the Ever6 measure), to those with families in the regular armed forces, to children currently in Local Authority Care or children who have been in care in the past.

Why has it been introduced?

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. Whilst schools are allowed to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit, the Government requires that a report of how the Pupil Premium has been spent, including the impact of that expenditure, is produced each year.

Please read the information below, which gives details of our Pupil Premium grant and how we allocate the funding.

All schools are requested to publish how they have used specific funding known as the Pupil Premium. More information about the Pupil Premium can be found at the following link:

The PE and Sports Premium

The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary- aged pupils, in the 2024 to 2025 academic year, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. This could include: • developing or adding to the PE and sport activities that school already offers and make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years • hiring qualified sports coaches to work with teachers • providing existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively • introducing new sports or activities into the curriculum offer • running and entering sporting competitions At Saxon Hill Academy, we understand the importance of physical development and work with a range of other agencies to support this across all areas of school, including physiotherapists and occupational therapists. All children have an EHC Plan, which outlines short- and longer-term outcomes that are linked to physical and/or sensory development. We set challenging, yet achievable, targets in discussions with families and pupils. The Primary PE and Sports Premium supports this work, and the outcomes set across the year.
